We had a fun family home evening last week. (I think I saw this idea on pinterest, but it was awhile ago and I don’t think I pinned it. The idea has stuck with me and I finally did it. So I’m sorry that I can’t give credit to whomever thought of this!)
Needed: a tube of toothpaste for each child. (Buy the cheapest kind you can find… while I hate waste- I promise this object lesson is worth it.)
I gave each child a tube to toothpaste and told them they could squeeze the entire thing out. They were like, “Really?? Are you sure??” Then declared it was the best thing ever. (Our daughter was soooo excited. She said, “Remember when I got to do this once before?? It was sooo awesome…..!)
After their tube was empty, I told them to take the spoon and shove it all back in. The one who got it all back in would be the winner. They tried, they definitely did, but obviously it’s not really possible.
Then we talked about how that it like our WORDS. We say things but can’t take them back. And sometimes that hurts people, even if we’ve apologized.
We’ve had a lot of ugliness around here lately and mom and dad have had enough! We also introduced them to the hot sauce bottle. If they say ugly things… they get hot sauce. So far, we haven’t had to use it yet!
But it was fun and our point was definitely made. Mom and Dad are going to try harder too.
I love good, simple, family home evening lessons. Anyone have any other ideas?? I’m always looking for things!
Family Home Evening is an evening we set aside once a week and spend it together as a family. During this time we have a simple gospel-centered lesson, prayer, song and a few other things. We find that when we make Family Home Evening a priority, everyone is more kind towards one another. It’s isn’t always perfect, but it’s better. To see our Family Home Evening Chart- click here.
